Where Aspiration Meets Inspiration…A Career in Construction

Our construction group – Conset and Civilex – is participating in the Melbourne West Jobs Fair on Tuesday 9 October 2018 at the Sunshine Convention Centre. The Australian Government is working in partnership with the Victorian Government to deliver three Melbourne Jobs Fairs. These Jobs Fairs will bring together job seekers, employers, employment service providers, and recruitment agencies.

We invite you to come along and have a chat with our Human Resources team about working with our construction group.

Our Construction Group

Our construction group specialises in construction works across transport, port, rail, water, resources, urban development, and renewable energy industries in both private and public sectors. Working with some of Australia’s leading civil engineering, development, and construction companies, we deliver and exceed our clients’ expectations on major services involving earthworks, roadworks, car parks, drainage works, landscaping, concrete paving, formwork, precast installation, and crushed rock/asphalt pavements.

Our Workforce

Conset and Civilex celebrate their 2018 Values Launch Day together

Our construction group is young and vibrant comprising of diverse people and roles. Our on-site workforce is predominantly made up of labourers and skilled plant operators who are supported by our experienced supervisors.

We are unique for the fact that we directly employ all our labourers, plant operators, leading hands and site supervisors. Civilex is involved in the Major Project Skills Guarantee and Conset offers apprenticeships which provide opportunities for Victorian apprentices, trainees, and engineering cadets to work on some of Victoria’s biggest building and infrastructure and construction projects.

Our Construction Career Journey

Nathan and Billy both started at Conset five years ago as a Carpenter and an Apprentice respectively. They have been able to develop their technical skills, as well as demonstrate initiative and leadership skills in delivering exceptional construction outcomes for clients.

Conset’s Billy Trotman and Nathan Burns lead the way on site

Today Nathan is a Leading Hand and Billy is currently learning the roles, responsibilities, and skills that come with stepping up as a Leading Hand and running a major formwork project at Epping Childcare Centre project.

Conset always looks to promote people who can motivate teams, read the changing direction of projects, think innovatively while being nose to the grindstone in planning site resources and labour requirements.

Barbara started with Civilex almost two years ago and is now a Team Leader working on one of our major projects called CD9 (Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Authority project). This is her inspiring construction career journey.

Civilex’s Barbara Cortese is now a Team Leader

“After working briefly in traffic control, I joined a labour-hire company and mentioned that I was looking for a labouring construction job. This marked the beginning of my construction career nine years ago.

My plan was to start at the bottom and work my way up. I wasn’t afraid of getting my hands dirty or showing that I had what it takes. It didn’t take long to prove myself and gain the respect from my fellow workers and supervisors while gaining valuable construction experience and skills.

If you’re someone who has an interest in the industry – just jump in and it’s entirely up to you where it can take you.”

George commenced his construction career as a Labourer and is now a Manager at Civilex. This is his construction career journey.

Civilex’s HSEQ Manager George Markelis

“I commenced my civil construction journey in 2009 as a labourer working two years in Geelong before moving to Melbourne. I’ve been with Civilex since November 2011. Initially employed as a labourer, in 2014 I moved into the role of Occupational Health and Safety as I was familiar with legal employer requirements through personal experience as a domestic builder. Today I lead a team of six and share the Health Safety Environment and Quality management role.

Construction is a multifaceted industry providing endless opportunities to passionate and motivated people who want to pursue many different career options. My career advice is just be open to everything that comes your way!”
