Bolte Precinct Recreational Centre #tbt

#ThrowbackThursday

Conset is taking a look back at the 2016 construction project the Bolte Precinct Recreational Centre in the Docklands under contract to Mirvac. The overall project consisted of a swimming pool, sauna, and massage treatment room and change facilities, gym, cafe and a trafficable green roof.

Green roofs are popular as they create healthy, ecologically responsible buildings. This one at Bolte Precinct Recreational Centre is on a pitched surface with a lovely outlook over Melbourne’s Yarra River.

Conset was involved in the footings, ground slabs and beams, formwork, reinforcement, concrete, post-tensioned structure, safety handrails and edge protection, cranage, hoisting, and loading and traffic management.

The Cool Cat of Conset

Concrete. Many people find the thought of the composite material of fine and coarse aggregate bonded together with a fluid cement which hardens over time a boring topic of conversation. But not Damien Gatt. Damien has been with Conset since 2012 – first as a Foreman before transitioning to Project Manager – and the reason he finds concrete so interesting is he gets to be hands-on in creating something special in an ever growing and in-demand industry.

Damien has over 20 years’ experience in the construction industry – five of those in domestic carpentry, with the remainder in concrete/structure construction. He’s a great advocate of Conset’s people, culture, and high-rise construction. Earlier this year the Conset team attended a Civil-Conset Company Values Launch Day where Damien was invited to share his experience and reflections of his six years with Conset.

Damien’s Favourite Flashback Project
Damien’s most enjoyable project was the Camberwell Grammar Project. Back in 2015 this project – contracted to Cockram Builders – was the largest Conset had won. The works involved detailed excavation, supply and placement of concrete and formwork, reinforcement and design, and supply of post tension. But what’s more amazing to hear is that over the course of a year Conset transformed an old sports oval into a carpark…and then built a suspended oval on top of that carpark…with an inground pool! Remember how I mentioned concrete was an interesting conversation topic?!

Check out the before and after photos of Conset’s Camberwell Grammar Project:

Soon after the Camberwell Grammar Project Damien was promoted to Project Manager and has since worked on numerous projects in and around Melbourne. But it’s the city-based high-rise projects he has become famous for within his family. His children admire the fact that “dad built that.”

Damien’s three children love the fact that “dad built that one!”

And that’s how Damien Gatt holds Conset’s “Damien-Cool-Cat-Dad” title. Perhaps next time you’re driving through Melbourne’s city streets take a look up and see that the Cool Cat of Conset was here.

In Great Form at East Brunswick Village

Conset has commenced work on the East Brunswick Village project.

Contracted to Hacer Group, Conset is delivering the major formwork package for the project. To date, Conset has been involved in building many residential projects but the East Brunswick Village is the largest residential project undertaken to date.

The overall project scope for the East Brunswick Village includes the construction of a new mixed-use development covering a footprint of 18,000m2 including 223 units, a Coles supermarket and Liquorland, four retail tenancies and a two-level basement car park and is expected to be completed in late 2019.

Conset Project Coordinator Wasantha Gunarathna has a hands-on role at the East Brunswick Village site. He is responsible for the coordination of works with consultants, main contractor and all of the subcontractors. “I make sure up-to-date documentation is obtained before the start of work and it’s as per program, as well as computation of order materials and delivery as per program.” Of course, life as a Project Coordinator is not always straightforward. Wasantha is also involved in resolving and clarifying any issues with drawings as well as on-site and coordinating shop drawings and uploading them onto construction management software Aeconex.

The Conset team is proud to be involved in this exciting project.

Conset and The Block

Are you a fan of The Block? It’s the popular television show that turns ‘normal’ people into builders and renovators and designers with dollops of television effect: drama. Teams of couples compete against each other to renovate houses or apartments and sell them for the highest price.

The Block 2018 season commences this Sunday 5 August on Channel 9 and the location where all the action and filming has already taken place is former The Gatwick Hotel – the biggest project in the show’s history – located in St Kilda, Melbourne.

And what has any of this got to do with Conset?

Well, for the past few years, Conset has been involved in the delivery of The Block concrete requirements contracted by Erilyan. This season we were involved in the pouring of slabs to provide extra balcony extensions, formwork, concrete and steel work. In season 2016, Conset was involved in the concreting of stairs, rooftop, and providing extra structure beams at the former soap factory turned Heritage Art Deco Building located in Port Melbourne. The winning team that year was William Bethune and Karlie Cicero who had the winning profit of $715,000.

Today we got a tour of The Gatwick Hotel and soon to be revealed interiors (and drama) of this season. Let’s just say you won’t be disappointed. Make sure you tune in.

Happy viewing!

Our New Line Up

2018 may be half over, but with some exciting announcements to share at Civilex it feels like just the beginning! We are delighted to announce a new era for our growing construction family with a new line up of companies in our fold: Civilex, Conset, and Grampians Excavations.

Existing as “cousin entities” for over a decade, Civilex and Conset have now formally merged, and Civilex has also acquired Stawell-based company Grampians Excavations. The consolidation of these three entities better positions our company for growth within the state and civil engineering and construction industries.

So, What Has Changed?
In July 2018 Civilex announced additions and developments to the Directorship of its associated business entities.

No one left. Everyone came on board.

Conset – a full structure concrete construction services business – has merged with civil construction company Civilex. The two Civilex Directors Ray Dando and Andrew Fairbairn have formally come on board as Directors of the Conset entity, whilst Joe Bartolo remains as Managing Director. Conset now has access to more resources which will allow the concrete business to grow and expand its wings into the civil space to participate in higher-end infrastructure projects across Victoria.

As previously published on the Civilex website and in a recent Press Release, all three Directors – Joe Bartolo, Ray Dando and Andrew Fairbairn – acquired the Stawell-based Grampians Excavations with founding Director Jim Leithhead retaining a 25% sharehold in the Grampians business. This strategic acquisition gives the group a greater regional reach and expertise.

Managing Director Joe Bartolo says, “We are excited about our future and will continue working hard to create and consolidate our high-performance culture that delivers projects on time, on budget and to the highest standard. We also look forward to welcoming employees working across the three entities into our shared company culture and values, and ultimately becoming one team.”

So, although it is now past the halfway mark for 2018, within the walls of the Civilex family this new line up really does mark a new beginning. Civilex is growing bigger and stronger, and the quality services we offer our clients reflect this. From our humble beginnings in 2008 to where we are now, Civilex has proven itself to be a company to watch. So, just keep watching.
